I founded Journeywork this year because I wanted to build an organization that helped people respond to the climate crisis with hope and joy. I wanted to give people a positive and tangible way to restore the natural systems around them as they restore themselves after the isolation and pain of the pandemic. I wanted to create a community of volunteers helping each other to replant neighborhood, school, and church yards that are healthier for people and for wildlife.
|
The response to this wish has filled me with gratitude and excitement. In our first year, we have already brought together 55 volunteers to replace 4,081 square feet of turf grass with 645 native perennials and shrubs. These plants provide food and shelter to birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. They do not need to be mowed. They are already adapted to local soil and weather. And they are pretty!

We are so thankful for our clients who have jumped right in to get their hands dirty and to champion our mission to friends and family.

Third graders plant for pollinators
Journeywork collaborated with Steve Jones from the LandHealth Institute to help third graders at William Penn Charter School design and install a pollinator garden near their campus bee hives. You can read about their thoughtful and multifaceted project in this article by Julia Judson-Rea.

Planting for the planet
Journeywork helped Faith and Bart convert their backyard into a shade meadow and filled in mulch areas in the front yard with native perennials.
|
Faith says, "We wanted our yard to reflect our values, to be pleasing to the eye, good for the planet, and easy to care for. Paige listened to our concerns as she designed our new yard. We learned so much, and our family and friends got involved too. It was fun!"

Journeywork is finishing out its first year with a dynamic and energized board, a passionate posse of volunteers, and a growing number of community members who are inspired by our mission. We look forward to meeting with community groups, school groups, individuals, and congregations over the winter to share what we do and plan for many plantings in the spring.
|
Thanks to generous donors on Giving Tuesday, we have raised $728 toward our $2,000 goal. With your contribution, we can tool up for 2023 and welcome our volunteers with gloves and trowels, clippers and shovels.

Thank you so much for your support.
