When Journeywork's founder Paige Menton invited me to help form & chair its Board this year, I was inspired by her vision for the organization. We seek to remedy not just widespread destruction of habitat and biological ecosystems, but the fracturing of social networks that once nourished our human need for connection. Bringing together volunteers to replant neighborhood, school and church yards with native perennials and shrubs is -- like so much in nature -- a complex, interconnected web that is much more than the sum of its inputs.
We can measure some numbers, counting up the square footage of turf monoculture (4,081) replaced with native plants (645 of them!). We can't as easily quantify the birds, insects, reptiles and amphibians now being provided with food and shelter; the pollutants and fossil fuel consumption prevented by eliminating mowing; nor the long-lasting beauty of a diverse landscape adapted to local soil and weather. It would be impossible to enumerate the knowledge and connections cultivated by the 55 volunteers who have already jumped in to get their hands dirty. We are so thankful for the clients and supporters who have shared and championed our mission, and to all who have already generously supported our first-ever year-end giving campaign.
If you haven't yet given, we thank you for considering a financial contribution to help us equip our volunteers with tools. As in any ecosystem, every input, however small, is meaningful. (Don't forget that if your employer provides for matching donations, you can double the impact of your tax-deductible gift!)

I know from my background in grassroots organizing that organic growth depends on person-to-person communication. Our Board members, volunteers, clients & supporters have already done so much to help Journeywork take root this year. By passing on this email and our social media posts in your virtual or real-world ecosystem, you'll be helping us grow and flourish.
